I’m reblogging this everyday.
Okay this mindset legitimately bothers me. The fact that people do this thing where they BRAG about how they don’t use math, as if to somehow say that they shouldn’t have learned it, I find to be seriously flawed.
The purpose of school isn’t to teach you ONLY what you will use directly every day. It’s to create adults who are well-rounded, intelligent individuals with at least a basic understanding of the way the world works and have respect for the different fields that create the world we live in today. Considering that math is one of the single greatest achievements of the human race and that nearly every single thing we know about the world, every single technological advancement is based in one way or another on mathematics, it’s NOT unreasonable to want people to have at least a basic understanding and respect for how it works.
Not to mention, math isn’t just some esoteric field that only mathematicians use. At it’s core, its simply about logic. Math helps develop problem solving skills and is a great exercise in logical thinking. It helps develop your brain. Math is the way that we take the world and condense it into a form that we can work with and manipulate. Even if you ONLY care about everyday useful skills, that mindset can help solve a variety of everyday problems, even ones we don’t usually think of as requiring math. (Just as an example, I work at a job that requires a lot of different repetitive tasks done as quickly as possible and I use a lot of quick mental algebra every day when I’m trying to figure out the most efficient way to organize my time.)
TLDR; It’s fine if you don’t personally enjoy math. It’s fine if you find it challenging, or hate your class or the way it’s taught. But don’t say that’s pointless to learn, because it’s the basis of our entire society as it is today and saying you shouldn’t learn it just because you don’t write equations in your everyday life, is like saying you shouldn’t have to learn where the other continents are because you don’t plan on going there. There are some things about the world that any responsible adult should have a basic understanding of, and math is one of them. It also teaches problem solving and logical thinking.
In other words: FUCK YEAH MATH.
