So. I keep seeing this on my dash and I cannot even being to describe how much this offends me.
I am a music major, and I pretty much need music to keep living.
I need music because it is my creative and emotional outlet, and if I didn’t have it, I’m pretty sure I would have killed myself in high school. I’m in love with music and everything about it, and if I stopped studying music and being in choir, I think I would literally die of a broken heart.
Where the fuck would the world be without music and fine arts?
Since when has music ever created something destructive like an atom bomb or more effective weapons to kill people with?
Sure science does great things for our society. I’m not denying that.
But music and arts are our very essence and culture.
Okay ya. Music and plays have offended some people, but isn’t that the beauty of it? Knowing that you can interpret things your own way?
So you know how much courage it takes to be a music/theatre/art major?
Do you know what it’s like to practice and practice and always have something wrong with the piece you’ve slaved over?
Do you understand how maddening it is to try and prefect something that will NEVER be perfect?
Why do we do it you ask? Because music and arts are the breath that keep the artists alive.
We strive for approval because we love it and need it. We want to share our art with the world and we hope that people will appreciate it because we artists wake up every day to do that.
During performances or while you’re painting or acting you literally have to cut yourself open and immerse yourself into what you’re doing. Do you know how challenging that is? To bear your soul before strangers and let them examine your blood, sweat and tears?
How fucking dare you call art useless.
It’s the shining light that’s left in this world. You need musicians and actors and painters just as much as you need scientists and engineers.
And you know what? You math majors try taking a fucking music theory class and see how well you do. Do you know how much studying and time and effort you have to put into that? It’s as hard as calculus. Not only that but having to practice and take lessons on top of all your core classes and work?
It’s not easy. But we do it because we want to show people the little slice of heaven we feel when people applaud us or compliment our work.
So next time you go to one of those Broadway musicals you like so much or go to a museum and see those beautiful paintings, ask yourself; are fine arts really usless?
The answer is no. Because without art and music, the world would be dull and hateful.
