officially the best madness scene in the western world
I’m sorry Lady Macbeth you had a good run
I love this scene.
So
Much.
All the little details, like how she moves differently, holds her head, her hair, I love her hair.
OMG YES
Can we just talk for a minute about how Azula’s descent into madness is not only brilliantly written and performed, but animated?? Because it is so incredible.
We learned in psychology and film about microexpressions—facial expressions that are extremely visceral reactions to emotion; nigh uncontrollable. And Azula is so impeccably animated it makes it seem like she has these: from the moment her father betrays her trust and takes flight as the Pheonix King, she’s devastated and desperate to hide it, and that Azula transforms into this Azula—sloppy, unfettered, and incredibly dangerous. There’s this animalistic side to her that is revolting and transfixing all at once—and at the end, I just feel sorry for her. I can’t help it. She literally has nothing left, not even her sanity.
Reason a million and three this show is the greatest.
Not only was the animation beyond brilliant, but Grey DeLilse did the most amazing job on Azula. From the moment in the mirror, Grey was able to give Azula that confusion, anger, and hurt in her voice that her character felt. You could hear her descend into madness.
I just can’t explain enough how much effort Bryke, Grey, and everybody put into creating Azula’s character. Her development runs so deep that you’re gonna have to look a little deeper to understand her character. She’s in so much pain, she’s young, and confused.
This. ALL of this! Like, seriously! It’s this show that has really inspired me to go to collage for writing. I want to write an intricate story, with amazingly diverse and complicated characters that develop and grow throughout an increasingly interesting and suspenseful story! Everything they did was well thought out, no character did anything OUT of character, everything was executed perfectly. And even after the show ends, their fanbase still raves and shats bricks for them. It’s amazing. I want to bring the joy and excitement to readers and watchers like the team of this show does.
Thank you, Avatar Team. Thank you SO MUCH for creating Avatar when I was alive to see it!!
