I have a folder in my artwork archive that is titled “Not So Proud of Design” and as much as I always want to, I never delete this folder, because it was in this dark place of hovering deadlines where the Deities of Design lamented over your poor decision making skills, that I learned the most valuable thing about how to design well.
That was, How not to design well.
It is in our errors that we find a better way of doing things. And in the end, that’s what it is all about. Design is never-ending search for improvement, in theory, practice and application. And you can only improve when you realize there has got to be a better way.
Deadlines in that sense are a godsend, because they force you to, if not find satisfaction, but contentedness in knowing your next project will be better.
So Here’s to the mindset of happily being insatiable. Feeling your work my not be good, but understanding that not as a negative criticism towards yourself, but as an opportunity of growth.
